Germain Soufflot, who was a precursor of the neoclassical movement, was born in Irancy, near Aux-erre. He was in Rome from 1735 to 1737, then worked in lyon (facade of the hôtel-Dieu, 1748). In 1750, at the request of Mme de poMPADOUR,he accompanied her brother, M. de Vandières (later the marquis de Marigny), who was the superintendent of royal buildings, to Italy. There, Soufflot sketched the ruins at Paestrum and, upon his return to France, obtained a number of official commissions. louis XV entrusted him with the construction of the church of Saint-Geneviève in Paris (1756-80), which later would become the Panthéon. inspired by the facades of Roman temples, he carefully opened the base of the cupola of the church to gain elegance and light, while resting the weight on four groups of columns. Soufflot had a profound influence on the neoclassical movement in architecture, heralded by his colossal style, a tendency that would later be developed by other noted architects.
